Marbella Town Hall Initiates Legal Action to Evict Squatters
The Marbella town hall has initiated the legal proceedings to evict squatters from the Puerto Rico area of the town. The council’s spokesperson, Félix Romero, confirmed that the administrative process to remove the squatters from the plot has already started. However, he did not provide any details regarding the duration of this procedure.
Green Campaigning Group Occupies Natural Site
In 2021, several individuals associated with the green-campaigning group Mar Puro, a self-proclaimed non-profit organization, took up residence on the grounds of the natural site. They have established a makeshift settlement, complete with tents, furniture, tables, and hammocks. The group has been offering nature-based experiences through a project called Gaianos, which has been receiving funding.
Local Tradition Threatened by Occupation
Since the occupation, Marbella residents have been denied free access to the area. This has raised concerns about the town’s well-known tradition, El Tostón, which is celebrated every first of November (All Saints’ Day) at this site. The event, which involves roasting chestnuts, may not take place this year due to the current occupation.
Plans for Urban Park Stalled by Squatters
The ultimate goal is to incorporate the land into an urban park for public use, following the acquisition of surrounding areas in recent years. However, the local administration has been unable to commence its project until the squatters vacate the premises.
Details of the Proposed Urban Park
The upper part of the estate, where a large peri-urban park is planned, spans 340,000 square meters. The municipality has owned this plot in its entirety since 2021, when the council paid three million euros to acquire the remaining 50% of the land, which was privately owned.
