Marbella’s Public Transport Usage Soars Following Free Scheme Introduction
Marbella, a town on the Costa del Sol, has seen a significant increase in public transport usage since the introduction of a free scheme nearly five years ago. The number of journeys has doubled since the launch of a mobility card in 2019, which allows free use of the town’s buses.
Yearly Growth in Number of Journeys
According to Félix Romero, a spokesperson for the town hall, there has been a consistent increase in the number of journeys year after year. Four years ago, the number of journeys was two million, but by November this year, it had risen to 4.8 million. These figures only account for the number of free mobility cards registered in the town and do not include journeys made by tourists. Therefore, the total number of trips could be nearing six million.
Over 17 Million Journeys Since Introduction
Romero stated that the initiative has made transport and mobility more accessible, resulting in over 17 million journeys since its inception. Despite the pandemic, the growth has been steady, with 2.5 million journeys in 2020, 3.6 million in 2021, and 4.7 million last year.
Increased Usage Among Retirees
Romero also highlighted the rise in the number of elderly people using the bus service. Two years ago, the number was 329,000, but by November this year, it had increased to 583,000. He emphasized that the initiative has a social purpose as it has improved the mobility of the elderly, especially considering the large distances and hilly terrain in the town.
Over 77,000 Mobility Cards Issued
Currently, Marbella has issued a total of 77,942 mobility cards. Of these, 66,500 are ‘blue cards’ registered in the town, and 11,362 are ‘gold cards’ for pensioners.
Public Savings and Service Coverage
Romero pointed out that the free service represents a saving of approximately eight million euros for the public. He added that the town hall annually contracts around 176,000 kilometers to cover this service.
