Bullfighting in Marbella is About to Return After Nine Years

It has been almost nine years since a bullfight was held in Marbella, a situation that appears to be changing as preparations are underway for a bullfighting event next June. At the moment, not many details are known, including which company is behind the organization of the event, where more shows of this kind are expected.

Marbella’s Bullring: A Forgotten Venue

The Marbella bullring has been forgotten since August 2020 when the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, visited the renovation works that had been carried out with a budget of 800,000 euros. At that time, she announced that a public tender would be launched to hand over the management of the bullring to a company, something that has not been confirmed to have happened.

Bullfights to Return to Marbella This Summer

According to the specialized portal “Málaga Taurina”, bullfights will return to Marbella this coming summer. Specifically, the first half of next June has been chosen as the date, with a “big lineup” for which all details are being finalized. The report suggests that the “organizing company”, whose name has not been revealed, wants to bring “three top figures” of bullfighting and, in the future, even recover the Corrida de Candiles. Marbella: A Member of the Network of Bullfighting Municipalities of Andalusia

Marbella is one of the five towns in the province of Málaga that are part of the Network of Bullfighting Municipalities of Andalusia (REMTA). Other members include Benalmádena, Gaucín, Montecorto, and Villanueva del Rosario. Joining this group was a proposal made by Vox last September and approved by the PP government team.

Bullfighting: A Unique Cultural Expression

At that council meeting, the Councilor for Festivities, Yolanda Marín, recalled that bullfighting is “a unique cultural expression of the Spanish and particularly of the Andalusians”. She said that, despite the 2020 renovation, the bullring still needed “some final adjustments” to comply with public show safety legislation. The goal, she explained, was to “put it into operation” in 2024, coinciding with the bullring’s 60th anniversary. Bullfighting in Marbella

Last Bullfighting Shows in Marbella

The last bullfighting shows in Marbella were held in June 2015, so they could be recovered nine years later. During the tripartite government era (2015-17), the bullring was only used for concerts, some of them massive like Raphael’s, and some “freestyle” motorcycle events. The concessionaire company, unable to organize bullfighting events, resigned in April 2017.

Renovation of the Bullring

At the end of 2018, the PP and OSP government proposed its renovation with a budget of one million euros, which was finally reduced in the award. The works started in October 2019 and were completed in the summer of 2020, although the bullring has not been used since. Bullfighting in Marbella
