Santana’s Remarkable Career in Tennis

Santana, a trailblazer in Spanish tennis, became a national icon after leading Spain to a victory over the US in the Davis Cup in 1965. This followed his Grand Slam victories in France in 1961 and 1964. Santana’s triumphs continued with a win at the U.S. Open in 1965, and he became World Number 1 after winning the 1966 Wimbledon men’s singles title. He also clinched gold at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. In total, Santana won 72 singles titles, with his last victory in Barcelona in 1970.

Santana’s Post-Playing Career and Personal Life

After retiring from professional tennis, Santana turned to coaching and captained Spain’s Davis Cup teams in the 1980s and 1990s. The father of five started his career as a ball boy at a Madrid tennis club and was encouraged by a club member to continue playing tennis. The Madrid-born sportsman, who had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, was married four times and owned a tennis and paddle tennis club in Marbella.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was among those who paid tribute to Santana. He acknowledged Santana’s victories at Roland Garros, the US Open, and Wimbledon, as well as his 72 tournament wins and an Olympic gold, which solidified his status as a tennis legend and one of Spain’s greatest sportsmen. The Spanish Olympic Committee also expressed their sorrow at Santana’s passing, recognizing him as a legend and a pioneer of tennis.
