Marbella to Host E1 Competition, the World’s First All-Electric Raceboat Championship
Cívitas Puerto Banús in Marbella has been selected as one of the nine global venues for the E1 competition, the world’s first all-electric raceboat championship. The event, often referred to as the ‘F1 of the seas’, is scheduled to take place on 1-2 June 2024.
Boost for Marbella with High-Profile Participants
The championship is expected to significantly boost Marbella’s profile, with team captains including tennis star Rafa Nadal, Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez, footballer Didier Drogba, American football player Tom Brady, DJ Steve Aoki, and singer Marc Anthony. Collectively, these participants boast over 1.1 billion followers on social media.
Marbella Mayor Highlights the Importance of the Event
Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz participated in the presentation of the Cívitas Puerto Banús Grand Prix at the Diputación, Malaga’s provincial authority. She emphasized the difficulty in securing the event and the importance of the collaboration between the administrations and Cívitas Puerto Banús. The mayor also highlighted the event’s commitment to sustainability and equality.
Event to Position Marbella as a Unique Destination
Mayor Muñoz stressed that the race will position Marbella as a unique destination. She also noted the city’s long-standing commitment to sports tourism, as demonstrated by events such as the Solheim Cup, the Ironman, the Davis Cup, the World Padel Tour, and the Rhythmic Gymnastics Grand Prix.
Expectations for the Event
Víctor González, the deputy regional minister of Tourism for the Junta de Andalucía, described the event as a “pure 21st century” event. It is expected to reach 160 million people and have a media and economic impact of 15 and 26 million, respectively.
Boost to Tourism-Sport Configuration
Francisco Salado, the President of the Diputación, expressed that the Grand Prix will further enhance the tourism-sport configuration of the Costa del Sol. He anticipates 20,000 visitors during the event weekend.
Competing with Other Powerful Venues
Juan Núñez, the head of Cívitas Puerto Banús marina, acknowledged the competition from other powerful venues. However, he expressed pride in their successful bid and the opportunity to compete with other major global destinations.
