Marbella’s San Bernabe Fair Kicks Off Amidst Storm Threats
The annual fair in Marbella, held in honor of its patron saint, San Bernabe, commenced last night. The event was marked by a condensed program due to the impending threat of rain from Storm Oscar in Andalucia. Despite the adverse weather conditions, both locals and expatriates gathered to enjoy the spectacular fireworks, traditional music, flamenco dancing, and Andalucian cuisine.
Program Adjustments Due to Weather
The fair’s usual proceedings were curtailed, including the traditional opening speech and the beauty pageants to crown the queens and ladies. The main gala, which was held on the terraces of the Puerto Deportivo (Sports Port), was expedited as light rain began to fall. However, the Marbella Fair 2023 concluded the night with a stunning fireworks display after the rain had passed.
Beauty Pageants and Speeches
The fair is renowned for its extravagant beauty pageants, with separate categories for children, teenagers, and adults. José Manuel Soto and Marbella’s mayor, Angeles Muñoz, delivered speeches as part of the event. However, other events were shortened, dance academy performances were cancelled, and the coronation ceremony was in jeopardy until the rain subsided.

The Feria de San Bernabe, which typically takes place at the beginning of June, signifies the start of summer and the peak tourist season in Marbella. One of the highlights of the San Bernabe Fair is the coronation of the queens and ladies. Young girls and women participate in beauty pageants to be crowned as the fair’s representatives. A host of children, teenagers, and young women competed for the title of queen and her ladies.
Fireworks Display Concludes First Night of Fair
The first night of the Marbella Fair 2023 concluded with a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the sky from the pier separating the Faro and Fontanilla beaches. The fair typically lasts for several days, creating a carnival-like atmosphere around the Costa del Sol town as summer finally begins.
