British Expat Dies During Childbirth in Spain

In a tragic incident, a British expatriate lost her life while giving birth on the Costa del Sol. The woman, identified as Kelsey Brown, was reportedly denied a C-section at the hospital. The 34-year-old hairdresser from Liverpool was taken to Ceram Hospital in Marbella on July 20, 2021, as per the details shared in a UK coroner’s court.

Scan Reveals Baby’s Death

The situation took a turn for the worse when a scan revealed that Kelsey’s baby had already passed away. The doctors allegedly informed her that she could not undergo a C-section or receive an epidural, leaving her with no choice but to deliver naturally. At this point, Kelsey was experiencing heavy bleeding and severe pain. However, the court was informed that the necessary blood supplies did not arrive until more than five hours later.

Tragic Death of Kelsey Brown

Kelsey Brown, who tragically lost her life during labour in Marbella, began delivering her baby at 1.30pm. The doctors used forceps to deliver the boy, named Daniel, who was found with his umbilical cord wrapped around his chest, preventing him from feeding. The inquest revealed that the hospital did not have any blood supplies on-site. A delivery reportedly arrived at 6.45pm, but just half an hour later, at 7.15pm, Kelsey was pronounced dead.

Family Demands Answers

Kelsey’s mother, Maria Brown, described her daughter as a “loving mum” to her surviving child, who was five years old at the time of the incident. The family is now seeking answers from the Spanish authorities, who have not provided crucial medical documents to the Liverpool coroner. The coroner, Andre Rebello, stated that this lack of cooperation hindered his ability to investigate the death, leading him to declare an open conclusion due to insufficient evidence.

Spanish Investigation Underway

The coroner expressed hope that the Spanish authorities would strive to bring justice to the situation and examine if there were opportunities for a different outcome. He also mentioned that the results of a post-mortem in Spain and medical notes from Ceram Hospital had been “withheld”. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office indicated that the Spanish investigation could take a while. Kelsey’s mother told the BBC that her daughter was a healthy individual who took good care of herself. The family has decided not to comment further until the Spanish authorities complete their investigation.
