Marbella Kicks Off Summer with Traditional Ox-Drawn Procession
Marbella, a picturesque town on the Costa del Sol, welcomed the summer season with a vibrant ox-drawn procession. This annual event is held in honour of San Bernabé, who has been the town’s patron saint since 1485. The procession, which marks the traditional start of summer, is a significant event in the town’s cultural calendar.
Devotees Gather for the Procession
Last Sunday morning, devotees gathered around the float carrying an image of San Bernabé in Plaza de la Iglesia. The procession set off amidst the clicking shutters of amateur photographers who lined the route, capturing the colourful spectacle.
Post-Procession Celebrations
Following the procession, a mass was held at Nagüeles park. The religious ceremony was followed by a community feast featuring paella and dancing. These festivities provide a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of Marbella.
Marbella’s ‘Romeria’ and ‘Feria’
The procession and subsequent celebrations mark the beginning of Marbella’s ‘romeria’ and ‘feria’. These events, which start from 5 June, offer a packed programme of activities. The town comes alive with music, dance, and food, drawing locals and tourists alike.
