Marbella’s Promenade Undergoes Major Renovation
The city of Marbella has embarked on a significant renovation project, focusing on over 2,300 metres of railings along the town’s promenade and enhancing 24 beach access points. The announcement was made on Monday, 30th September by Diego López, the councillor for public work and beaches. The project, which commenced in La Bajadilla and will extend to the Hotel Meliá Don Pepe area, is budgeted at 900,000 euros. The cost is shared equally between the town hall and the Junta de Andalucía, as part of the tourism plan for large towns and cities.
Second Phase of Renovation Project Commences
This renovation marks the second phase of a project that began a year ago. The previous phase saw the installation of new railings made of galvanised steel with zinc baths, offering superior protection and durability against humidity and sea salt. The timing of the project has been strategically planned to minimise disruption to tourists and the public, with work being carried out during a period of lower holiday traffic.
Three Sections of Work Detailed
The renovation work is divided into three sections. The first section spans 405 metres, from the Puerto Playa restaurant to the Ochoa Hospital. The second section, 647 metres long, runs from the hospital complex ramp to Avenida Arias Maldonado, ending at the Da Bruno restaurant. The final section, over 486 metres, extends from this point to the Meliá Don Pepe hotel.
Improvements to Ageing Infrastructure
López highlighted the necessity of the work, citing the deteriorated condition of railings that are over 40 years old. In addition to the railing replacements, 24 beach access points will be improved with new railings and repaired marble. Existing wrought iron benches will be replaced with rough brick ones, and a significant portion of the promenade’s fountains will be updated.
Large Towns and Cities Tourism Plan
Two years ago, the town hall and the Junta de Andalucía agreed to implement the ‘Plan Turístico de Grandes Ciudades de Andalucía’ (large towns and cities in Andalucía tourist plan). The plan, with a budget of 10 million euros, is co-financed by each public administration and executed in two phases. The first phase, covering the years 2023 and 2024, is nearing completion.
