Marbella Town Hall Approves Eviction of Squatters on Puerto Rico Land

The Marbella town hall has sanctioned the eviction of squatters from the land known as Puerto Rico. This area, rich in natural beauty, has historical significance as the site of Marbella’s earliest civilizations. Since 2021, however, it has been occupied by members of the Mar Puro association who have set up camp on the land.

Illegal Occupation and Construction on Puerto Rico Land

The deputy mayor, Félix Romero, stated that the land is being unlawfully occupied by an association that permits illegal camping. This not only endangers the people living there due to lack of security, but also prevents other citizens from enjoying the Puerto Rico area. The situation has been further exacerbated by the illegal construction of a wall that completely encloses the plot.

Eviction Process Initiated by Town Hall

The town hall has now initiated the eviction process. A previous attempt at voluntary eviction last summer was unsuccessful, leading to the council’s approval of the eviction agreement in a full council meeting. The eviction will need to be reported to the court before it can be carried out.

Ownership of Puerto Rico Land

The 400,000-square-metre plot of land is currently owned by the town hall, following agreements with four owners and subsequent expropriations. The last plot of land was sold in December 2023. The site has traditionally been used for local festivals, including ‘El Tostón’ on All Saints’ Day, which residents have been unable to enjoy since Mar Puro’s occupation.

Current Occupants of Puerto Rico Land

Although several people initially settled on the plot in 2021, currently only the director of Mar Puro, Karan Juarros, and another young man reside there. Juarros, who describes his organization as an “NGO dedicated to creativity projects and channelling energies in nature”, claims they are not squatters but rented the plot for 2,000 euros a month until the owner’s death.

Mar Puro’s Activities on Puerto Rico Land

Juarros defends his project, which he describes as therapeutic. He claims that Marbella residents bring their children to the site to escape from new technologies and harmful habits. The organization does not charge for workshops but accepts donations. They are currently expanding a baby area and installing new yurts and a natural jacuzzi. The site also features an open-air gym, a theatre, an art area for handicrafts, and other activities for youngsters.
