San Pedro Alcántara Enhances Road Safety with Smart Pedestrian Crossings
San Pedro Alcántara’s Avenida Virgen del Rocío, a key route in Marbella’s northern ring road, is set to receive a safety upgrade. The local government has announced plans to install nine smart pedestrian crossings and enhance the area’s lighting. The deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcántara, Javier García, highlighted the importance of this area, home to key facilities such as the health centre, Miguel Hernández, Al-Andalus and Salduba schools, and the parish church. The project, with a budget of 80,000 euros, is expected to be completed within a month.
How Smart Pedestrian Crossings Work
These smart pedestrian crossings operate using an LED lighting system. When a pedestrian approaches the crossing, sensors detect their presence and illuminate the crossing, alerting approaching vehicles. This system not only helps drivers spot pedestrians more easily, but also enhances safety for both parties. Additionally, these crossings are particularly beneficial for visually impaired individuals, aiding them in safely crossing the road.
Improved Lighting and Future Plans
García noted that, until now, the area’s only source of lighting was street lighting, which proved insufficient. To address this, nine energy-efficient and highly effective LED streetlights have been installed in both directions, totaling eighteen. Luminous vertical signage has also been added to clearly indicate pedestrian crossings to vehicles. Looking ahead, García revealed plans to extend this initiative to Avenidas Príncipe de Asturias and Jorge Guillén in 2025. This is part of a broader energy efficiency programme, aimed at reducing emissions and electricity bills, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Smart Pedestrian Crossings: A Growing Trend on the Costa del Sol
Smart pedestrian crossings are becoming increasingly common on the Costa del Sol’s main streets and avenues. In San Pedro Alcántara, eleven additional crossings were recently installed on the boulevard, further enhancing road safety. This was complemented by the renovation of horizontal and vertical signs in the area.
