Marbella’s Socialist Spokesperson Calls for Improved Public Transport

Isabel Pérez, the Socialist spokesperson in Marbella, has called on the local government to address the ongoing complaints from public transport users. The issues raised include lack of punctuality, low bus frequency, and overcrowding on some buses. Pérez has requested a study to analyze these problems.

Identifying Problem Areas

The Socialist Municipal Group suggests conducting a study across the districts to pinpoint exactly where the problems occur. From there, they can address the improvement of these aspects. Pérez explained that, according to local residents, some buses are completely packed with people, often in unsuitable conditions. This situation also results in people having to wait at bus stops for longer periods because they can’t fit on the bus.

Longstanding Issues

Pérez reminded that these problems have been present for many years in Marbella and San Pedro. Despite this, in 2019, Mayor Ángeles Muñoz renewed the concession with the same company. Pérez finds it unacceptable that six million euros are paid annually from municipal coffers to the concessionaire, yet the service continues to generate a large number of complaints from public transport users.

Public Demand for Better Service

“We are convinced that citizens, in addition to not having to pay for the bus, though they do so with their taxes, also want it to be punctual and not have to wait so long,” Pérez said. These issues affect those who need to get to work on time. Residents have expressed their dissatisfaction and are asking for solutions.

Complaints from San Pedro Alcántara

Pérez recalled that in the last ordinary plenary session, they already conveyed the complaints from users in San Pedro Alcántara. However, she pointed out that the problems are present throughout the municipality. The best way to identify them more specifically would be to conduct a study from the districts, each in its area of influence.

Addressing the Problem

“We need to identify which lines are most affected by delays and low frequency and tackle the problem,” Pérez detailed, adding that it’s simply a matter of political will. Ideally, the councilwoman believes, the frequency should not exceed 15 minutes and the fleet should be increased, at least on the lines that have more problems and receive more complaints from users.

Preparing for Summer

Finally, Pérez explained that with summer approaching, it would be good to take measures to improve urban transport and thus facilitate mobility at a time when the city’s population significantly increases.
