PSOE Parliamentarian Calls for Investigation into Excessive Overtime Payments in Marbella City Council
Josele Aguilar, a parliamentarian from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Andalusia, has called on the Marbella City Council to clarify the excessive overtime payments made to municipal workers. He has also requested an internal investigation by the Andalusian Anti-Fraud Office. Aguilar has described the issue as “extremely serious” and assured that they will be closely monitoring the resolution of the case.
Excessive Overtime Payments in Marbella City Council
The issue of excessive overtime payments in the Marbella City Council, particularly during pre-election periods, has been ongoing since at least 2019. A few weeks ago, it was revealed that the Andalusian Anti-Fraud Office had asked the City Council for an internal investigation to “establish responsibilities”. The complaint was lodged by the CGT union with the Andalusian Parliament.
PSOE Deputy’s Visit to Marbella
Last Friday, PSOE’s regional deputy Josele Aguilar visited Marbella. When questioned by the media, he described the issue as “extremely serious”. He demanded transparency from the mayor and the Popular Party (PP) of Moreno Bonilla. Aguilar believes it is necessary to clarify whether “these payments have been made to people linked to the PP” and has called for “explanations”.
Allegations of Fraud in Overtime Payments
According to the Anti-Fraud Office, more hours were paid than there are in a month, which Aguilar described as “astonishing, impossible in terms of labor and administration”. He questioned, “Who has been paid? The information is that it has been municipal workers very close to the PP leadership that governs the City Council”. Aguilar believes there are “clear indications of fraud in the payment of overtime” and this issue needs to be clarified.
Resolution of the Case
“We will be attentive to the resolution of the case, which not only has to be opened by the City Council, but also communicate the result”, Aguilar detailed. The parliamentarian believes that “it will not be enough to try to cover this up in any way”. The Andalusian Anti-Fraud Office has made it clear that more overtime hours have been paid than there are in a month, as a worker was credited with 721 hours in April, when working non-stop every day would amount to 720 hours. The excessive payment of overtime has typically been made in years leading up to municipal elections.
