Antonio Banderas Starts Over with Luxury Beach Home
Malaga-born actor Antonio Banderas has decided to start from scratch with his luxury La Gaviota beach home, situated on the Los Monteros estate to the east of Marbella. This week, Banderas took the initiative to demolish the entire structure and has applied for a new building licence from Marbella town hall. The actor’s intention is to rebuild the property in compliance with urban planning laws.
Demolition Despite Legalisation Process
Interestingly, this decision comes despite the council’s request earlier in 2024 to the Andalusian high court to file the demolition proceedings, as the property was in the process of being legalised. However, Banderas has chosen a different path, and the new building licence application is currently being processed, following the complete demolition of the original property.
Controversial History of the Property
The property, built in 1995 by the previous owners, has a controversial history. It was constructed with an illegal licence granted by the then town mayor Jesús Gil, and it encroached on a public right of way and a plot of land designated for sanitation infrastructure. This led to complaints from residents of the residential development, and in 2003, the court annulled the 1995 municipal building permit. This has resulted in numerous legal issues and lawsuits for Banderas over the past two decades.
A Cherished Home Despite Legal Troubles
Despite the legal troubles, the property holds a special place in Banderas’s heart. It is where his daughter Stella del Carmen was born and where he spent most of his marriage to actress Melanie Griffith. Banderas also chose to spend the Covid pandemic lockdown in this Marbella property.
