Marbella Named Best European Destination for 2024
This Saturday, Marbella received the distinction of being the best European destination to visit in 2024. The award ceremony took place at the Hospitalillo. Mayor Ángeles Muñoz stated that this recognition is granted by the European Union, a claim that is not accurate as the award is given by a website dedicated to tourism promotion, which charges for its services.
Marbella’s Previous Recognition in 2022
This is not the first time Marbella has been recognized. In 2022, the municipality secured the second position. Now, it has received the “European Best Destination” distinction, being named the best European destination for 2024. The event took place this Saturday at the Royal Hospital of Mercy and served as a promotional opportunity for the mayor.
Clarification on the Awarding Body
Mayor Ángeles Muñoz has stated to representatives of the tourism sector that this recognition is especially important because it is granted by the European Union. However, this is not true. The distinction is granted by a website dedicated to tourism promotion since 2009, which also charges for its services. The website is managed by a company based in Belgium and describes itself as “the most visited website dedicated to travel and culture in Europe.”
Marbella’s Investment in Tourism Promotion
In 2022, Marbella paid 30,000 euros to be among the finalists, eventually securing the second position. This year, it has been named the best European destination, following a vote among the website’s followers from countries around the world.
Award Presented by CEO of European Best Destinations
The distinction was presented to the mayor by the CEO of European Best Destinations, Maximilien Lejeue. During his speech, he emphasized that the European Best Destination is an award given on behalf of millions of travelers. He stated that Marbella is a destination of all records. He pointed out that it is the first Spanish city to reach the top of the podium and has received the most votes, compared to Lisbon, Budapest, Barcelona, Rome, Paris, or Milan, since the competition was created in 2009. He noted that it is the favorite destination for tourists seeking the best gastronomy, wellness, sports, sun, beaches, and leisure.
