Private Pools in Marbella Allowed to be Filled this Summer
Private pools in Marbella will be allowed to be filled this summer. The Andalusian Government has once again left the decision to fill the pools for the upcoming summer in the hands of the local councils in the province of Malaga.
Green Light from the Regional Administration
The Minister of Sustainability, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, stated that the regional administration will give the green light due to the improvement in the water shortage situation. This decision was announced on Tuesday after a preparatory meeting with the Drought Committee in the province of Malaga to coordinate actions.
Local Councils to Decide
The filling of the pools is the responsibility of the local councils, but the Andalusian Government will not put any obstacles in the way for this to be done this summer. The Minister explained that the regional government’s role will be to coordinate the decisions of the municipalities to ensure “there is no disparity”.
Measure Affecting Private Pools
The measure affects private pools, both communal and individual, as filling was allowed before Easter in other cases. The Minister also stated that garden watering will have a maximum limit of 400 cubic meters per hectare per month.
Botanical Species and Water Consumption
The measure will also be extended to botanical species of greater interest in relation to gardens. For now, the consumption limit in the province of Malaga will remain at 200 liters per person per day.
Relaxation of Drought Measures
Before Easter, the Andalusian Government relaxed drought measures and allowed the filling of hotel pools, but not private ones. In mid-April, it was announced that the decision on further relaxation of restrictions would be left to the local councils.
Marbella’s Decision Pending
In Marbella, the mayor stated on April 19 that she would wait until May 2, when the Drought Committee was to meet, to decide on the pools. That deadline has passed, and no decision has been made by the government team, nor has that meeting taken place.
Marbella’s Pool Statistics
Marbella is the third municipality in Spain with the most pools, according to data from the Cadastre, with more than 10,700, only surpassed by Madrid (14,127) and Cordoba (11,683). In the province of Malaga, there are 78,606 pools, most of them on the Western Costa del Sol. The municipality with the most is Marbella (10,744), followed by Mijas (8,214) and Malaga capital (5,926). Alhaurín de la Torre has 4,966, Estepona 4,264 and Benalmádena 3,943.
Water Reserves in the Province of Malaga
The Concepción reservoir, which supplies Marbella and the rest of the Western Costa del Sol, is at 75% and has the most reserves in the province of Malaga.
