Churro Café Employee Arrested for Stealing 86,000 Euros
In a shocking turn of events, a churro café employee in Marbella has been apprehended by the National Police for allegedly stealing up to 86,000 euros over a period of at least one year. The employee is said to have manipulated the cash register continuously, leading to this significant theft.
Owners Notice Discrepancy in Cash Register
The café owners began to suspect foul play when they observed a substantial discrepancy between the receipts from the automatic cash machine and the amount deposited in the cash drawer. They reached out to the machine manufacturers, who ruled out the possibility of a machine error or a counting failure. The manufacturers instead suggested the likelihood of fraudulent tampering with the machine.
Surveillance Footage Confirms Suspicions
The suspicions were confirmed with the aid of surveillance footage. It was revealed that the suspect was inserting banknotes for payment, manipulating the machine to immediately return the same notes, and yet still receiving the change from the transaction – the amount for the goods he intended to charge. The machine was unable to detect that the initial banknote had been returned, allowing the employee to steal approximately 86,000 euros from the business.
Employee’s Off-Hour Visits to the Shop
Further investigations revealed that the employee would visit the shop outside his working hours and make himself a drink. During these visits, he would insert a 200-euro note and then retrieve it back, using his own technique to deceive the machine.
Police Investigation and Actions
The theft group of the Local Police in Marbella, leading the investigation, has proceeded to search the employee’s home and freeze his bank accounts. The case continues to unfold as more details emerge.
