Marbella Loses 2.5 Million Euros in Government Funding Due to Census Data Discrepancy
Marbella is set to lose approximately 2.5 million euros in government funding due to a discrepancy in census data, as reported by the town hall. The town would have received an additional 2.5 million euros from state contributions if the population count was based on the council census rather than the data from the INE national institute of statistics, according to council spokesperson Félix Romero.
Marbella’s “Real Population” Under Discussion
The issue was discussed in a recent town hall meeting, where councillors deliberated on the recognition of Marbella’s “real population”. The latest data from INE estimates the town’s population at 159,000, which is 7,999 less than the council’s census. Romero stated that the council will fight for the recognition of all 166,999 inhabitants listed on their register, as the state funding they receive is dependent on it.
Impact of Lost Funding on Vital Services
The lost funding, which amounts to 314.31 euros per person per year, is crucial for providing vital services to residents. The cumulative loss of 2.5 million euros from the government is significant, especially for a town council like Marbella, which has a fluctuating population of nearly 280,000, according to studies on waste and water consumption.
Demographic Trends in Marbella
Despite the funding setback, Marbella continues to experience a steady increase in population, solidifying its position as the seventh largest town in Andalucía. The official census shows a sustained annual increase of between 3,000 and 4,000 people over the past decade, adding up to around 20,000 new inhabitants.
Marbella’s Positive Birth Rate and Attraction for Migrants
Marbella is one of the few municipalities in the country with a positive birth rate, with more births than deaths registered. The town is also a popular destination for foreigners and tourism workers who choose to settle and raise their families in Marbella.
