Modernisation of Marbella’s Sewage System Underway
Acosol, the public water company of the western Costa del Sol, has entered into a contract with Covico 2015. Covico 2015 emerged as the winner of a public tender last summer, aimed at upgrading the sewage system in the Costabella residential area of Marbella.
Major Project to Prevent Future Flooding
This significant project will revamp the entire water supply system in the area, thereby mitigating future flooding issues. The initiative is a result of a collaboration between the Marbella town hall, Acosol, and Costabella residents. The financing of the project will be shared, with 50% coming from the residents, and 25% each from Acosol and the town hall.
Project Completion Expected by September
The project is slated to take eight months, with completion expected in September. The total cost of the work, inclusive of taxes, is estimated at 3.5 million euros.
Costabella’s Outdated Infrastructure
The Costabella residential area, constructed in 1960, is situated between the A-7 motorway and Alicate beach. It comprises eleven streets, two small squares, and five passageways. However, the residents have been plagued by leaks, unpleasant odours, and blockages due to the outdated infrastructure, including a septic tank, and the absence of a separate sewage system.
Addressing Pressure Problems and Leaks
The water supply, made of fibre cement (a type of asbestos), has not been updated since its construction, leading to significant pressure problems and numerous leaks. The area is serviced by two interconnected reservoirs; one in the upper part next to the A-7 and the other in the middle part, on Calle Costa del Sol. The works will be carried out in several streets and passageways, affecting around 360 homes, some of which are also experiencing leaks due to the ageing water infrastructures.
