Historic Sugar Factory in Marbella to be Transformed into a Residential Home for the Elderly
In a bid to breathe new life into a ruined sugar factory, Marbella council has announced a project to convert the historic site into a residential home for the elderly. The council is set to invest a total of €10 million in the project, with €6 million allocated for the construction of the home and €4 million for the restoration of the historic Trapiche del Prado mill.
Preserving the Historic Structure of Trapiche del Prado
Despite being in ruins, the Trapiche del Prado mill still retains much of its original structure, including the rooms where sugar was extracted from cane, a major crop in the area. The mill’s history dates back to 1644, with its first owners being Mateo Marco and Gaspar Pompes. In 1720, the complex was acquired by the Inquisition of Granada, which expanded the factory to meet the growing demand for sugar.
Transition from Sugar to Wine and Brandy Production
However, by the mid-19th century, sugar production was no longer profitable, leading the mill to switch to wine and brandy production. This continued well into the 20th century until production ceased and the factory fell into ruins.
Interpretation Centre to Highlight Marbella’s Industrial History
The council’s plan is to transform the ruins into an ‘interpretation centre’ that will highlight the building’s history and Marbella’s old industrial activity. Key elements of the mill, such as the wooden roof and floors and an aqueduct, will be restored. The Trapiche del Prado, also known as the Trapiche de la Inquisicion or Trapiche de Marbella, is located just two kilometres north of the historic city centre.
Construction of the Elderly Home Underway
Construction work on the home for the elderly has already begun and is expected to be completed in two phases over 14 months. The home will accommodate 150 residents in two new buildings. The project was initially slated for completion in 2010, but the contracted firm was unable to complete the project due to the aftermath of the financial crisis.
Facilities at the New Residential Home
The new residential home will feature both double and single rooms, complete with bathrooms. It will also have a reception and waiting area for visitors, a kitchen, dining room, laundry and linen space, common areas and living rooms, as well as sections for specialised care and nursing.
