Maritime Public Transport Proposed to Ease Congestion on Malaga’s A-7 Road
The new president of the Municipalities Association of the Costa del Sol, Manuel Cardeña, has proposed the use of boat-based public transport as a solution to the traffic congestion on the A-7 road in Malaga province. Cardeña believes that maritime connections between municipalities could help alleviate the high season traffic jams on both the A-7 and AP-7 roads.
Exploring Alternatives to Road Transport
Cardeña has expressed his commitment to exploring alternatives to road transport, given the limited options currently available. These alternatives could include promoting public transport or revisiting old plans for a coastal train service. The aim is to find effective solutions to the traffic problems that plague the region, especially during the peak tourist season.
Consideration of Toll Removal on AP-7 Highway
Another proposal that has been put forward is the removal of tolls on the AP-7 Mediterranean highway. This move is expected to divert traffic from the A-7 road, which has been frequently voted by motorists as the worst road in Spain. Cardeña has warned that the Costa del Sol could become an uncomfortable destination unless solutions are found for the traffic issues.
Establishing Sea Connections at Existing Ports
Cardeña has suggested that sea connections could be established at existing ports such as Benalmadena, Marbella, and Fuengirola. He emphasized the need for a visionary plan that all municipalities can agree on, in order to serve the needs of all residents and visitors.
Coastal Train Preferred by Hoteliers Association
Despite Cardeña’s maritime proposal, the Costa del Sol Hoteliers Association (Aehcos) believes that a coastal train is the best solution to the region’s travel problems. Association vice-president, Javier Hernandez, stated that a train link would be the most beneficial, but would require financing.
