No Improvement in Andalusian Public Health Waiting Lists

The Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella has reported worsening conditions despite the proposed solutions announced by the president of the Junta, Moreno Bonilla. The Andalusian Health Service (SAS) has released the latest official data from December 2023, showing no improvement in the public health sector in Andalusia, particularly in terms of waiting lists.

Increase in Waiting Time for Surgical Interventions

Across all hospitals in the province of Malaga, the waiting time for surgical interventions has increased, although there is a slight decrease in the number of patients awaiting surgery. The situation is particularly dire at the Costa del Sol University Hospital, which serves Marbella and the rest of the region. The average delay for a surgical intervention has risen to 134 days from the previous 112 days. This means that a patient from Marbella or the rest of the Western Costa del Sol waits an average of four and a half months for surgery.

Number of Patients Waiting for Surgery for Over a Year Increases

More alarmingly, the number of patients who have been waiting for surgery for over a year has increased to 1,356, up from 1,146 in June 2023. There is only a slight decrease in the number of patients on the surgical waiting list, which stands at 5,577. The longest delays are in the repair of inguinal and femoral hernias, with 198 patients waiting for over a year.

External Consultations Waiting List Continues to Grow

Another significant waiting list is for external consultations, which has seen even larger increases. At the Costa del Sol Hospital, there are 52,139 patients waiting for their first consultation, a 14% increase from the previous report. The average delay is 130 days. Of these, 44,651 are from primary care and 7,488 are in hospital inter-consultations.

Calls for Resignation of Health Councilor Amid Negative Data

In response to the negative data in the province, the general secretary of the PSOE in Malaga, Dani Pérez, has called for the resignation of the health councilor. He criticized the poor management of the health sector by the Junta, President Moreno Bonilla, and Health Councilor Catalina García, and suggested that García should resign immediately out of shame.
