Movistar Plus+ Premieres New Series “Marbella”
The streaming platform Movistar Plus+ premiered its new series, “Marbella”, on Thursday, May 2. The series, which portrays the city as the “United Nations of organized crime”, has already made its first two episodes available out of a total of six. The series is based on an investigative report conducted in 2021.
Spanish Fiction Continues to Focus on Marbella
Following the premiere of “Los Farad” on Amazon Prime Video in December, and with more Marbella-set productions in the works, Movistar Plus+’s new series can now be viewed. Spanish fiction continues to focus on the city, albeit its darker sides, for its reality-based productions.
“Marbella”: A Six-Episode Series on Crime in Costa del Sol
“Marbella”, a six-episode series (the first two of which are now available), is the latest offering from the creators of “La Unidad”. The series focuses on the criminal gangs operating on the Costa del Sol. It is based on an investigative report published in April 2021 in “El País” by Arturo Lezcano and Nacho Carretero, the latter of whom is the author of the well-known book ‘Fariña’, which was also adapted into a series.
Successful Lawyer César Finds Himself in Danger
César (Hugo Silva) is a successful lawyer in Marbella who is clear about the lines he should never cross to succeed. However, when he least expects it, he discovers that he is in danger and he is the one who needs a lawyer.
Marbella: The “United Nations of Organized Crime”
The series portrays Marbella as the “United Nations of organized crime”, a phrase that the authors say was conveyed to them by the police. The series also refers to the presence of the Dutch Mocro Maffia in the municipality, an organization that is now more well-known, but which Lezcano and Carretero warned about in 2021.
Reality Surpasses Fiction
Sometimes reality surpasses fiction, which could be the case with this series, even though it is based on a journalistic work. Created by Dani de la Torre (director) and Alberto Marini (screenwriter), who were responsible for “La Unidad”, the series was filmed in Marbella, Cádiz, and Gran Canaria.
