Marbella’s Castle Wall Gets a New Look with Ornamental Lighting
Marbella’s historic castle wall has undergone a significant transformation. The town hall has recently completed a comprehensive restoration of the monument, located in the old town. The restoration included the installation of a new ornamental lighting system, enhancing the castle’s aesthetic appeal.
Restoration Work Focused on Protection and Stabilization
The restoration work primarily aimed at protecting and stabilizing the castle walls. This included waterproofing the upper sections and removing invasive plant species. Diego López, the councillor in charge of the project, emphasized that the goal was to transform this historic site into a tourist attraction.
Addressing Serious Deficiencies Caused by Time
López explained that the castle required a significant intervention due to serious deficiencies caused by the passage of time. These included erosion in the joints and parts of the castle being exposed to rain, resulting in numerous leaks. The restoration focused on the north and east sides, which had seen the least amount of remodeling to date.
Phased Approach to Restoration
The restoration work was divided into several phases, including wall repairs. López also highlighted the extensive work done on vegetation management. This involved removing flower boxes attached to the wall and relocating palm trees and other trees. Additionally, a significant amount of weeds with long-established roots were cleared.
Continuing Restoration Efforts in Marbella
López noted that this restoration project is part of a series of efforts to preserve and enhance important historical sites in the town. Other sites include the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo, the Hospital Real de la Misericordia, and Trapiche de Guadaiza. Future projects are planned for the Trapiche del Prado and La Trinidad convent.
