Socialist Spokesperson Isabel Pérez Demands Accountability for Animal Shelter Flooding
The spokesperson for the Municipal Socialist Group, Isabel Pérez, has demanded accountability from the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, for the failure of the works carried out at the Triple A animal shelter. The facility flooded less than a week after its inauguration.
Previous Warnings Ignored, Says Pérez
Pérez reminded in a statement that a year ago, the Socialist Party had already asked the governing team of the Popular Party to listen and attend to the requests of the volunteers of this association. Even then, they were reporting deficiencies in the work and that it did not meet the existing needs. “It is clear that they have not been listened to and we are now seeing the first consequences,” she said.
Facility Fails to Withstand Rain, Floods Within a Week
Pérez expressed regret that less than a week after Muñoz toured the facilities to inaugurate them, they have proven incapable of withstanding the rain and have flooded, in addition to other defects also reported by the workers.
Public Money Wasted on Defective Works
The socialist councilor added that the City Council has invested 1.8 million euros of “public money” for a work that has shown deficiencies from the first day. This is considering that the budget was increased by nearly 50 percent, the “maximum legal limit”. The work at the Triple A facilities was awarded for 1.2 million euros, but subsequently, up to two contract modifications were made for a total amount of more than 600,000 euros.
Socialist Party Questions Cost Overruns
“The Socialist Party has requested the reports that justify this cost overrun from the City Council’s registry, as it seems disproportionate to us,” Pérez said. She also urged the Popular Party to carry out the work with more rigor and, above all, to fix the exposed deficiencies as soon as possible.
Importance of Caring for Abandoned Animals
Finally, the socialist spokesperson highlighted the importance of caring for abandoned animals to give them a better life. However, she stressed that this should always be done with respect for public money and without botched jobs of this kind, which the volunteers of the Triple A do not deserve.
