National Police Launches “Plan Marbella” to Combat Crime

The National Police has initiated the so-called “Plan Marbella” today, which will increase the number of officers regularly serving in the town until October. The plan aims to combat organized crime and common delinquency. In the past two months, there have been four shootings in the municipality.

Ending the Wave of Shootings in Marbella

The primary goal of the plan announced by the National Police this Thursday is to put an end to the wave of shootings that have been occurring in some areas of Marbella, such as Nueva Andalucía and Puerto Banús, in recent months.

Reinforcements from Various Police Units

To achieve this, personnel from the Police Intervention Unit and the Prevention and Reaction Unit in various police departments in Eastern Andalusia, along with Canine Guides and Aerial Means, will reinforce the services provided by the Local Citizen Security Brigade. The Marbella National Police Station also expects additional personnel to join its staff during the summer season, coinciding with the implementation of the “Safe Tourism Plan” and the “Summer Plan”.

Increased Controls in Residential and Commercial Areas

In practical terms, the “Plan Marbella” will mean a greater uniformed police presence on public roads in the city from now until October. Controls on vehicles and individuals will be increased, with random devices at alternate times and locations to increase the element of surprise. Units will be deployed in areas where crowds gather, especially in commercial and leisure areas, without forgetting the checks that the Police will carry out in residential developments.

Specific Operational Devices Included in the Plan

The plan includes specific operational devices, designed to minimize the proliferation of criminal offenses during the time of year with the highest number of tourists in the town. The main objective is to reduce the impact of common crime and organized crime, detecting and preventing the movements of those involved in such networks, seizing items such as weapons and drugs, or controlling areas considered most sensitive such as leisure areas and residential developments.

Collaboration with the Local Police

The reinforcement units will join the different local brigades of the Marbella Police Station, which will also have the collaboration of the Local Police. In this way, “all efforts are combined to provide a safe environment and improve the objective indicators of public safety and the subjective safety of residents and tourists”, according to the National Police statement.

Response to the Wave of Shootings

This is a response to the wave of shootings in the municipality, four in the last two months, which have caused alarm. On February 10, a man was injured by gunshots on Yedras Street in Marbella, which has already been clarified by the National Police. On March 11, shots were fired at a restaurant located on Juan Belmonte Street, where there were no victims. This has also been resolved. On March 16, another firearm incident occurred in a restaurant area on José Banús Avenue, resulting in one injury. And on April 2, a young man was injured with several bullet impacts after a clash between clans in the Los Naranjos urbanization in Nueva Andalucía.
