Marbella Mayor Advocates for a Unified Decision on Private Pool Filling Amid Water Shortage
The Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, is advocating for a wait until early May to make a decision regarding the filling of private pools, both communal and individual, amid a water shortage situation. This decision was left to the municipalities by the Junta. Muñoz insists that there should be a unified stance in the region.
Estepona Municipality Takes the Lead in Allowing Private Pool Filling
The Estepona municipality was the first in the Western Costa del Sol to decide to allow the filling of private pools, after confirming that water supply is guaranteed. The rest of the municipalities have yet to make a move. On Friday, in response to media inquiries, the Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, spoke up.
Unified Decision Among Municipalities is Crucial, Says Muñoz
Muñoz has consistently spoken about making a joint decision among all municipalities, even though Estepona has already taken a different path. She believes that it is necessary to wait until the next Drought Committee meeting on May 2nd to make a decision. At that time, she said, the decision will be made to “move from a serious to a severe level of drought, which is lower”. “Then we will be in a position to take a measure that will be joint,” she added.
Water Supply from La Concepción Reservoir at 73% Capacity
Muñoz believes that the stance should be the same among all municipalities in the region, which are supplied by the La Concepción reservoir, currently at almost 73% capacity. “Estepona will have its own criteria, but we must respect the steps that have been marked by the Junta and Acosol and wait for that meeting,” she insisted.
Junta Allows Pool Filling in Hotels but Not Private Pools
Before Easter, the Junta eased drought measures and allowed the filling of pools in hotels, but not private ones, both communal and individual. Recently, the decision to further relax restrictions was left to the municipalities. Marbella is the third municipality in Spain with the most pools, according to data from the Catastro, with over 10,700, only surpassed by Madrid (14,127) and Córdoba (11,683).
