Marbella City Council Sponsors E1 Series Electric Boat Race
The Marbella City Council has approved a sponsorship of 605,000 euros for the E1 Series event, a global competition of electric boats organized by Alejandro Agag, son-in-law of former Spanish Prime Minister, José María Aznar. The funds will be paid to Puerto Banús S.A., the host of the event, with plans to extend the sponsorship to 2025 and 2026. This comes as the construction of an athletics track and an Olympic swimming pool in La Campana is halted due to lack of funds, yet the Marbella City Council continues to spend large amounts of money on sports sponsorship.
Details of the E1 Series Sponsorship
According to documents accessed by Marbella24horas, 605,000 euros will be provided for the “E1 Cívitas Puerto Banús Grand Prix”, scheduled for June 1 and 2, 2024. The money will be given to Puerto Banús S.A., the concessionaire company of the port area hosting this high-speed electric boat competition. The contract was signed on May 17 as sponsorship for this event to “promote the tourist and institutional image of the Marbella City Council”. There is a possibility of extending this financial support for 2025 and 2026, bringing the total contribution to 1.815 million euros over three years.
International E1 Series and Celebrity Participation
The E1 Series, also known as the electric Formula One of the sea, also has the sponsorship of the Andalusian Regional Government and the Provincial Council of Malaga. The championship will be held in international locations such as Monaco, Hong Kong, Geneva, Venice, Jeddah, and Rotterdam, along with Puerto Banús. About ten teams will compete on the water, led by personalities such as Rafael Nadal, American football player Tom Brady, footballer Didier Drogba, driver Sergio “Checo” Perez, and the latest addition, actor Will Smith. Singer Marc Anthony also has his team and will perform at the inaugural concert of the event on May 31 at Oassis Marbella Fest.
Organizers and Backers of the E1 Series
The competition is driven by Alejandro Agag, son-in-law of José María Aznar, along with electrical engineer Rodi Basso and RaceBird designer Sophie Horn. They have the financial backing of a Saudi Arabian investment fund.
