Marbella’s Mayor Announces Ambitious Sports Stadium Project
Marbella’s Mayor, Angeles Muñoz, has unveiled plans for a new sports stadium with a seating capacity of 10,000. The project, which also includes a hotel and retail outlets, is estimated to cost between €110 and €130 million. The funding for this ambitious project will be sourced privately, with no financial contribution from the city council.
Additional Facilities Boost Construction Cost
In addition to the stadium, hotel, and shops, the project also promises a car park with 1,000 spaces. These additional facilities have resulted in a significant increase in the construction cost, which was initially estimated at €18 million.
Previous Stadium Plans Fell Through
Over the past four years, plans for a new stadium have been presented but none have materialized. In 2020, Best of You, the company that manages Marbella FC, proposed an 18,000-seater stadium. However, this plan was scrapped due to the Covid pandemic.
2022 Brings New Hope for Stadium Project
In 2021, the Marbella council announced plans for a new stadium. The following year, a competition was held to select a design for the new facility. The winner was announced in 2022, bringing renewed hope for the project.
Ex-Footballer Esteban Granero Leads the Charge
A news conference was held recently where Angeles Muñoz and Best of You boss, ex-footballer Esteban Granero, announced the latest attempt at the project. The plan is to demolish the old Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas stadium, which was vacated in May 2021, and have the new facility ready by 2026.
Marbella FC Foundation to Oversee Construction
The Marbella FC Foundation will be responsible for building the stadium and aims to secure a 75-year-long concession on the facility. Esteban Granero expressed his vision for the stadium, stating it will be a facility for everyone and has the potential to reach a national dimension.
Mayor Muñoz Expresses Confidence in Project’s Solvency
Mayor Muñoz expressed her confidence in the project, stating that the involvement of Esteban Granero is a testament to the project’s solvency. However, no final designs or artist impressions of the proposed new area were shown at the news conference, and it remains unclear whether the 2022 competition design winners, Huerte Arquitectos, will be involved in the project.
