Marbella Honors Reverend José López Solórzano with Street Naming

The Marbella City Council paid tribute to Reverend José López Solórzano, affectionately known as “Cura Pepe”, by inaugurating a street in his honor near the La Bajadilla port. Solórzano served as the parish priest of the Church of the Incarnation for 13 years. The street naming was a request made by the World Peace Association four years ago.

Reverend Solórzano’s Departure and Recognition

In late June 2020, the Diocese of Malaga decided to make a change in the parish of the Incarnation, which Solórzano left after 13 years and after 17 years as the archpriest of Marbella-Estepona. “Cura Pepe” bid farewell to the city in September and by the end of the year, the World Peace Association asked the City Council to name a street or square after him. He already had a street named after him in Estepona since August 2020, and now also in Marbella, inaugurated today, which was approved in the plenary session of March 2022.

Reverend Solórzano’s Reaction to the Tribute

The honoree expressed his joy at sharing this special event with his family and the good people of a land where he spent many years and to which he has immense affection. He added that the real protagonists are the residents of Marbella, whose images, memories, faces, and moments he will always cherish. He also thanked all the people who promoted this tribute and the municipal corporation, as he feels that a small imprint of his life will forever be marked in this blessed and grateful city.

Mayor’s Remarks on the Tribute

Mayor Ángeles Muñoz stated that this is a recognition through which the city wants to convey the love and admiration it professes for their beloved “Cura Pepe” and to value a professional and personal trajectory rich in experiences. She highlighted the magnificent work he has done over so many years will forever remain in their hearts and that the special bond that connects him to their municipality will be even more palpable from today.

Reverend Solórzano’s Contributions to Marbella

The mayor recalled his decisive intervention in achieving the appointment of the Virgin of Carmen as Patroness of Marbella, being a link between the Fishermen’s Brotherhood, the City Council, and the Diocese. Also, his role as chaplain of the Costa del Sol Hospital for over fifteen years or his support for Caritas in organizing the traditional Christmas Bazaar, among other actions. She also emphasized that his work has contributed to beautifying and updating the socio-cultural heritage of the city, reflected in the Church of the Incarnation. This includes the improvement of the roof, main door, altars and imagery, the installation of a columbarium or the acquisition of a new tabernacle, the renewal of the lighting of the parish facilities or the complete restoration of the chapel of the Holy Christ. He has also been distinguished as a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher, of the monastery of Yuste, and of the order of San Lázaro.
