Marbella Carnival Revives Group Contest with Local Troupe “La Joya” Taking the Win

The Marbella Carnival has revived its Group Contest this year, which was last held in 2019. The local troupe “La Joya” and the chirigota from Algeciras “No le doy más vueltas que me caliento” emerged as the winners of the night, which also paid tribute to the late carnival enthusiast Juan José Calvente Alcántara. The contest, held between February 13 and 16, is a must-attend event for carnival lovers in Marbella.

Finals Held at Municipal Theatre with Eight Groups Performing

The finals took place on Friday at the municipal theatre, where the eight qualifying groups performed. In addition, the chirigota ‘Igualito que antes’ from CEIP Al Andalus, the winner of the Children’s Contest, also performed. The local quartet “Este año salimos por los pelos” by Isaac Morilla also took to the stage, much to the delight of the audience.

Jury Verdict Announces “La Joya” as Winner

Following the contest performances, the jury’s verdict was announced. In the comparsas category, the Marbella troupe “La Joya” by Nono Quiñones and Andrés Benítez triumphed over “El Paraíso del Momo” from Algeciras. The third place went to “Los Refugiados” also from Marbella, who won the best city award. In fourth place was “Los incurables” from Málaga.

Chirigota Winner: “No le doy más vueltas que me caliento”

In the chirigotas category, “No le doy más vueltas que me caliento” from Algeciras, who had been in the preliminaries of the Cadiz Carnival, won. The second place went to “Las Mediogrammys” and the third to “A mí que me registren”, both from San Roque (Cadiz). The fourth place was taken by “Los que viven de alquiler” from Málaga.

Tribute to Late Carnival Enthusiast Juan José Calvante Alcántara

The night was also emotionally charged as a tribute was paid to the late carnival enthusiast Juan José Calvante Alcántara, who tragically died in a traffic accident last Wednesday.
