Healthcare Crisis Looms on Malaga’s Western Coast
The healthcare situation on the western coastal strip of Malaga province is becoming increasingly alarming. Despite the growing population, the necessary infrastructures to support it are yet to be established. The Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella, a major extension project, is a prime example of this, as it remains unopened.
Delayed Opening of Costa del Sol Hospital
The hospital was initially set to open in 2024. However, due to structural reinforcements and regulatory changes, the opening has been postponed once again. The new projected opening date is now set for the end of 2025.
Increased Project Costs
The project has undergone two modifications, leading to an additional cost of nearly ten million euros. This brings the total investment to 61.7 million euros. The Junta de Andalucía’s regional ministry of health has described the project as one of great complexity and scope, subject to unforeseen events and situations that must be addressed to meet the current demand for care.
Challenges Faced During Construction
Among the issues encountered during the project are regulatory changes in the radiopharmacy of nuclear medicine, modifications to the foundation of the radiotherapy ‘bunker’ room, reinforcement of the structure of the existing building, the discovery of rock in the excavation area of the thermal plant, and the installation of fireproofing elements for the openings connecting to the existing car park.
Progress of Facilities
Despite the unforeseen events and modifications, the project is now 95 per cent complete. Some facilities are already operational, including Building C, which houses administration equipment. Building B, which is dedicated to outpatient services and houses a new surgical block, the new radiotherapy oncology and nuclear medicine departments, and 37 new multi-purpose beds, is nearing completion.
Final Phase of Construction
The final phase of the project, which involves the renovation of the old building (Building A) designated for hospital processes, emergency services, intensive care unit, hospital pharmacy and laboratory, is progressing as planned. This phase also includes the provision of psychiatric care with inpatient facilities.
