Marbella’s Grand Vision: A New Stadium for the 2030 FIFA World Cup
Marbella is setting its sights high with a massive investment ranging from 115 to 130 million euros. This substantial funding is earmarked for the construction of a new stadium, which could potentially serve as a sub-host venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. As Spain, Portugal, and Morocco unite to host this colossal football event, Marbella is eager to play a part. The town’s mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, and the head of the Marbella FC foundation, Esteban Granero, have recently announced this exciting news, which has been a topic of discussion in the town for several years.
Construction Timeline and Goals
The construction work is set to commence this year, with the aim of completing the facility by 2026. The new stadium is a long-held dream and a significant commitment to the local football club and grassroots sports. The stadium will have a capacity of 10,000 spectators, meeting the minimum requirement set by FIFA for a World Cup match venue. The company in charge will oversee not only the construction but also the demolition of the old Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas stadium, where the new infrastructure will be erected, in the heart of Marbella.
Project Approval and Expansion
The approval of new town planning regulations in Marbella has paved the way for this project, which is set to expand and grow. Both the mayor and the president of Marbella FC believe that the new stadium will invigorate Marbella’s grassroots sports and provide a valuable resource for other city clubs.
More Than Just a Stadium
Beyond its role as a potential sub-host venue for the FIFA 2030 World Cup, the stadium will also feature a residential space with 90 rooms for elite athletes. Additional facilities will include a 1,000-space car park, a shopping area, and a 1,500-square-metre high-performance centre.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The town hall estimates that the project will create between 1,600 and 2,300 new jobs. The expected GDP impact is projected to be between 36 and 50 million euros, further boosting the local economy.
