Guerra Bar Crowned Champion of Malagueña Fritura Fish Frying Contest

The Guerra bar in San Pedro Alcántara, located on the western strip of the Costa del Sol, has been declared the winner of the Malagueña fritura fish frying contest. This competition, organized by the Gastronomic Academy of Malaga, saw the Marbella bar outshine 14 other establishments from the coast. The contest, which began on 30 June, concluded with an awards ceremony at La Pérgola del Mediterráneo on Sunday, 15 July.

Best Fried Anchovies and People’s Jury Prizes Announced

In the category of best fried anchovies, the award was bagged by Hermanos Alba. The people’s jury prize for the best Malagueña fritura was awarded to La Escollera, Estepona, while the best ‘boquerones fritura’ was won by La Parada, from Caleta de Vélez. These two awards were decided by the public who had the opportunity to taste the fried dishes.

Preserving Authenticity and Promoting Quality

Following the awards ceremony, Manolo Tornay, president of the Gastronomic Academy of Malaga, stated that the competition was established to preserve the authenticity of a dish as unique to Malaga as a good frying. The contest also aimed to reward establishments that are committed to quality frying and to promote the excellence of the gastronomy of Malaga and Andalucía.

Malaga Town Hall Councillor Expresses Gratitude

Jacobo Florido, Malaga town hall councillor, expressed his gratitude to the gastronomic academy for its initiative. He encouraged them to continue the competition over time, highlighting the value of the art of making a good frying dish, which is internationally recognized.

Participating Restaurants in the Malaga Fritura Competition

The restaurants that participated in this inaugural Malaga fritura competition included Casa El Lebeche, La Jábega, Chiringuito María, La Familia, La Escollera, Tropicana, Bar Guerra, Los Manueles, La Ponderosa Playa, El Canarias, Mediterráneo, Avante Claro, La Parada, Hermanos Alba, and Ramos. All these establishments received an anonymous visit from the jury during the competition.
