La Pollinica Procession Kicks Off Holy Week in San Pedro Alcántara
The procession of La Pollinica marked the beginning of the Holy Week in San Pedro Alcántara 2024 on Sunday morning. As per tradition, the event will feature five parades, all organized by the town’s only brotherhood. The procession started its journey in front of the church, marking the beginning of the route.
Weather Conditions and New Route for Palm Sunday
Despite the overcast skies on Palm Sunday, there was no threat of rain and the temperature was pleasantly above 20 degrees Celsius. The procession followed a new route this year. The previous day, the new Brotherhood of Our Lady of Bitterness had paraded through the Leganitos neighborhood of Marbella. Palm Sunday kicked off with the first two processions. The weather forecast for the day predicted worsening conditions in the afternoon, but the morning events went ahead without any issues.
Traditional Pollinica Viviente in Nueva Andalucía
In Nueva Andalucía, the traditional Pollinica Viviente took place, featuring a child (Pablo Fernández) riding a small donkey, starting from the Parish of the Virgin Mother. The Pollinica Viviente of Nueva Andalucía was also part of the Palm Sunday processions.
La Pollinica Procession in San Pedro Alcántara
In San Pedro Alcántara, the Pollinica procession also took place, starting at 12:00 PM, with a new route and Jesus Christ covered with a red mantle. The musical accompaniment was provided by the Group of Our Father Jesus Nazarene of Villanueva del Arzobispo (Jaén). After the usual mass, the procession began, with the tent already set up in front of the church, a change from previous years when it was on the side.
Procession Route and Throne Carrying Tradition
The throne made its way around the square to Revilla Street, heading towards Oriental Avenue. It then turned north to Antonio Martín, Don Vito (Plaza de Istán), and Estepona, before turning left onto María Rosa Street. The procession then reached Pablo Ruiz Picasso Avenue, a wider stretch, and from the Marqués del Duero roundabout, it passed through Lagasca, San Juan, and returned via Marqué del Duero to its temple. The throne was carried on the shoulder, as was done in 2019 and, after the pandemic, in 2022 and 2023, abandoning the “Sevillian” sack model used from 2013 to 2018.
Successful Start to Holy Week 2024
With splendid weather, heavily clouded skies, and large crowds on the streets, the first procession organized by the San Pedro brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene and Most Holy Mary of Solitude made for a brilliant parade. The schedules and routes for the Holy Week 2024 of San Pedro Alcántara have been announced.
