Tourist Apartment Occupancy Drops in Marbella in March

The influx to tourist apartments in Marbella during the past month of February fell compared to the same month of the previous year. There was a reduction in the number of visitors who opted for this type of accommodation and also in overnight stays, particularly among domestic tourists.

A Tough Start to the Year for Marbella’s Tourist Accommodations

The year has not started well for tourist accommodations in Marbella, with declines in tourist arrivals, a trend that had already been observed in 2023. This is according to the latest official data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) for a month in which Easter was celebrated.

March Sees Decrease in Tourists and Overnight Stays

In March, the number of tourists and overnight stays decreased, the average stay remained the same, but occupancy increased. In January, 8,967 visitors chose a tourist apartment in Marbella, 501 fewer than the previous year, a decrease of 5.29%. This figure is far from the record for this month, which was set in 2017 with 12,615 tourists using this type of accommodation.

Drop in Both Domestic and Foreign Visitors

The data shows a decrease in both domestic (-374) and foreign visitors (-127). Spanish tourists accounted for only 15% of the total, while the rest came from outside Spain.

Overnight Stays in January

In January, according to these data, 67,951 overnight stays were recorded, 5.13% less than a year ago (71,629). That’s 3,678 fewer nights. The drop is due to domestic tourists, whose stays decreased by 43% to 6,413, while foreign stays increased by 2.17% to 61,538. The average stay increased slightly to 7.58 days, compared to 7.57 in the same month of the previous year. Occupancy rose to 74.44%, about ten points higher than the same period in 2023 (63.90%).

Employment in Tourist Accommodations

According to the INE, it is estimated that the staff employed in this type of accommodation was 564 people.

Hotels and Apartments

If we add the visitors who stayed in hotels (62,196) and those who opted for tourist apartments (8,967), Marbella received 71,163 tourists in January.
