Wildfire Erupts in Marbella’s Nagüeles Area
On Monday afternoon, 22nd July 2024, a wildfire was reported in the Nagüeles region of Marbella. The fire was declared by Andalucía’s specialist Plan Infoca forest fire brigade at approximately 5.15pm.
Emergency Response to Marbella Wildfire
The emergency response was swift, with updates from Plan Infoca indicating the deployment of numerous resources. These included two semi-heavy helicopters, a super puma, two ground load planes, four light amphibious aircraft, and a coordination aircraft. On the ground, six forest firefighter groups, two BRICA units, four TOP units, a GREMAF unit, an AAMM unit, two fire trucks, a UNASIF unit, and a UMIF unit were dispatched.
Firefighting Efforts in Full Swing
At the peak of the blaze, around 100 professionals, 14 aircraft, and 4 heavy fire-fighting vehicles were engaged in the firefighting efforts. The fire was eventually stabilised at 9pm. Firefighters from both the Marbella fire station and Malaga’s provincial brigade worked in collaboration with the Junta’s specialist Plan Infoca crews.
Challenging Conditions for Firefighters
The firefighting efforts were complicated by high temperatures and wind, both in the air and on the ground. Despite these challenges, the Marbella council confirmed that the town’s firefighters were present from the outset, along with the Local Police, who were tasked with securing the entire perimeter.
Impact on Local Residents and Traffic
While no properties have been evacuated so far, access to some homes in the affected areas has been restricted. The wildfire also impacted local traffic, with heavy smoke from the forest fire affecting the AP-7 motorway and the Istán road at one point.
