High-Speed Chase in Puerto Banús Ends in Three Arrests
Marbella Local Police apprehended three individuals following a high-speed car chase in the Puerto Banús area on Sunday. The pursuit, which began in a vehicle and ended on foot, was initiated after the police station received multiple calls from concerned citizens.
Reckless Driving Sparks Police Pursuit
Eyewitnesses reported a BMW speeding and skidding around roundabouts, prompting a police chase that culminated in three arrests. Despite attempts by the driver and the other two occupants to evade capture on foot, one of whom even after being handcuffed, the police were successful in their pursuit. The incident occurred on Sunday, 1 September, at approximately 3:40 in the afternoon.
Police Respond to Public Calls for Safety
Following reports from witnesses, police units were alerted to a car posing a threat to road safety. The vehicle was spotted by a patrol car on Avenida de las Naciones Unidas in Puerto Banús. Officers observed the driver skidding at high speed around a roundabout and instructed the car to stop, but the driver seemingly disregarded their orders.
High-Speed Chase Ensues on A-7
The patrol car then pursued the BMW, which was reportedly driven in the wrong direction on the A-7, endangering other motorists by driving on the hard shoulder and making abrupt changes in direction. The vehicle was also significantly exceeding the speed limit, clocking over 150 kilometres per hour on an 80 km/h road.
Driver Attempts to Evade Police, Causes Damage
After exiting the highway, the driver continued at high speed along Avenida Duque de Lerma, but was halted by cars waiting at a red light. Police used this opportunity to block the BMW with one of their cars, a move that resulted in damage to the patrol vehicle. Despite being forced to stop, the driver and the other two occupants tried to flee on foot.
Public Assistance Leads to Arrests
One of the occupants was apprehended as soon as he exited the car, but attempted to escape after being handcuffed. He was found 900 metres away, concealed under a bush, thanks to the assistance of a citizen who offered an officer a ride on his motorbike. The second occupant was arrested near a block of flats, while the driver was discovered hiding under a car.
Driver Tests Positive for Drugs, Lacks Licence
Upon arrest, the driver was found to be without a driving licence and tested positive for cocaine and other drugs. Consequently, he was charged with an offence against road safety for reckless driving and another offence against public order for disobedience. The other two occupants were also arrested on suspicion of the latter charge.
