Signs of Christmas in the Midst of a Pandemic

The festive season is upon us, marked by cozy coats, kitsch jumpers, twinkling lights, bows, Santa hats, and the new addition this year – face masks. This year is the second Christmas spent alone and abroad for many, including myself. The daily messages from family back home in snowy Scotland, asking if the Christmas spirit has been felt yet, are a constant reminder of the season.

The British Quest for the Christmas Spirit

Perhaps it’s a uniquely British phenomenon, this yearning for the Christmas spirit. After a year of keeping emotions in check, the dark mornings and freezing nights of December make us long for a reason to get out of bed. The British go all out in their quest to feel ‘Christmassy’, spending lavishly, admiring children in Christmas jumpers, and getting excited at the first scent of a pine tree. The sight of old friends in a pub, brisk cold walks, and the sound of Mariah Carey’s voice are all part of the Christmas experience.

Christmas in Spain: A Different Experience

This year, however, I find myself in Spain, where the sun still outshines the Christmas lights strung around palm trees. The face masks seem to be dampening the Christmas spirit. Despite this, I am determined to find that festive feeling. A friend and I decide to visit Malaga, one of Spain’s largest cities, known for its Christmas decorations.

Malaga: A Winter Wonderland Amidst a Pandemic

Despite the pandemic, Malaga has transformed into a winter wonderland, with streets filled with lights and Christmas cheer. The sight of the city bustling with Christmas shoppers is a stark contrast to the quiet streets we have become accustomed to in the past year. The crowds, however, make me feel anxious, and I long for the quiet streets of Estepona.

Estepona: A Quiet Christmas Haven

It is only when I return to the old town of Estepona that I finally feel the Christmas spirit. The white-washed buildings adorned with fairy lights and wreaths, the sound of a brass band and children’s voices, and the sight of a man who resembles Santa Claus jogging along the promenade all contribute to the festive feeling. Despite the physical distance, I finally feel close to Christmas.

Where to Find the Best Christmas Lights in Spain

For those looking for the best Christmas lights in Spain, cities like Malaga and Estepona are worth a visit. Despite the pandemic, these cities have managed to keep the Christmas spirit alive with their stunning decorations and festive atmosphere.
