Spain Braces for Extreme Heatwave
Spain is preparing for a severe heatwave, with weather warnings issued across the majority of the country until at least Thursday. The soaring temperatures are being fueled by a blast of hot air from Africa.
Weather Agency Issues Red Alert
Spain’s weather agency, AEMET, has issued a warning that Jaen, located in Andalucia, could experience temperatures as high as 44C between 9am and 12pm on Wednesday. This is when the mercury is predicted to reach its peak. The eastern province of the southernmost region, along with much of Madrid, has been put on red alert for Wednesday. This signifies an ‘extreme risk’ to life in these areas.
Malaga Province to Face High Temperatures
Malaga province is expected to escape weather warnings until Wednesday. However, an orange alert will be in effect in Antequera and Ronda due to anticipated highs of 42C and 40C respectively.
Costa del Sol Anticipates Heat Surge
The Costa del Sol has not yet been placed under an alert this week. However, it is predicted to experience its highest temperatures on Friday. Cities like Marbella are forecasted to see the mercury rise into the late 30s.
African Air Mass Contributes to Heat Increase
According to AEMET, the increase in heat this week is partially due to a mass of air from Africa. This air is extremely hot and dry, contributing to the soaring temperatures across Spain.
