Marbella Steps Up Loggerhead Turtle Conservation Efforts
In a bid to enhance the conservation of loggerhead turtles, Marbella is increasing the number of volunteers overseeing a turtle nest near Puerto Banus. This comes after a loggerhead turtle laid nearly 70 eggs on one of Marbella’s busiest beaches during the peak of summer, an unusual occurrence that sparked a campaign to protect the nest.
Volunteer Drive for Turtle Nest Protection
Currently, the campaign has 166 registered volunteers. Their mission is to ensure the safe hatching of these eggs by late August or early September. However, the campaign’s goal is to enlist between 300 to 400 volunteers, specifically for night shifts.
Engaging Youth in Environmental Awareness
Alejandro Gonzalez, the responsible councillor, highlighted that the campaign is aimed at engaging young people to foster environmental awareness. The initiative is seen as an opportunity to educate the younger generation about the importance of conservation.
Gratitude for Collaborative Support
Susanne Stamm, President of ProDunas, a local association dedicated to preserving Marbella’s remaining sand dunes, expressed her gratitude for Marbella’s collaborative support in advancing conservation efforts. She emphasized the current participation of 166 individuals in shifts, with a target to increase that number to accommodate nocturnal duties.
Educational Workshop for Volunteers
Stamm also revealed that volunteers would have the opportunity to attend an educational workshop. This will provide them with a clear understanding of their responsibilities and nest protection protocols. She underlined the enthusiasm of these volunteers to contribute to the well-being of nature.
How to Participate
Those interested in participating and registering can find more information on the Produnas website. This initiative is a great opportunity for individuals to contribute to the conservation of loggerhead turtles and learn more about environmental protection.
