Malaga Coastline Ravaged by Storm Ciril

The Malaga coastline has been severely impacted by storm Ciril, which is being touted as the most devastating storm in recent years. Every beach along the coastline has suffered some form of damage due to the storm’s powerful waves that hit the province on Monday.

Malaga City Beaches Bear the Brunt

The beaches of Poniente, Guadalmar, and Malagueta in Malaga city have experienced significant sand loss. Beach bars in these areas have also been damaged. The sea has dragged stony material to the area of Las Acacias in El Palo. The promenades of Guadalmar, Poniente, Palo, and Pedregalejo have been flooded. A section of the wall of the Guadalmar promenade has also collapsed. Social media users have been actively reporting the damage.

Nerja, Torrox, and Algarrobo Suffer Damage

The beaches of El Chucho and Playazo in Nerja, Torrox, and Algarrobo have also lost sand. The coastal path of Playazo, Chucho, and Torrecilla has been damaged. In Torrox, the central area of Ferrara beach and the steps on the beaches of Peñoncillo and Calaceite have eroded. Algarrobo beach has lost fine sand and stony material has appeared, dragged by the sea.

Velez-Malaga Beaches Lose Sand

In Vélez-Málaga, the beaches of Torre del Mar, El Mortero, and Chilches have lost sand. The breakwaters of the Chilches station and the coastal path have been affected. The sewage infrastructures have been damaged and the road in Chilches, Mezquitilla, and Lagos has been affected. The seafront promenade in Torre del Mar and the adjoining roads have been severely flooded.

Rincon de la Victoria and Torremolinos Affected

The beaches of Cala del Moral, Rincon, and Los Rubios in Rincon de la Victoria have lost sand. The coastal path from Benagalbón to Vélez has been damaged. The waves have reached the promenade of La Cala and have partially flooded it. In Torremolinos, the beaches of Carihuela and Bajondillo have experienced occasional losses or shifting of sand.

Benalmadena and Fuengirola Beaches Damaged

The beaches of Malapesquera, Santa Ana, and Arroyo de la Miel in Benalmadena have lost sand. Part of the promenade at Las Gaviotas has been damaged. In Fuengirola, there has been an occasional loss of sand at some points of its beaches with the appearance of longitudinal steps and the formation of berms on the beaches of Santa Amalia and San Francisco.

Mijas and Marbella Suffer Erosion

In Mijas, sand has been lost in front of the first line of houses, reaching the exterior enclosures of their plots in the area of Los Cordobeses on the Bombo beach. The access walkways and some municipal seasonal facilities have been directly affected. In Marbella, the dunes between the port of Cabo Pino and the fishing port of La Bajadilla have eroded, with the collapse of several access walkways in the area of Real de Zaragoza and Dunas de Artola.

Estepona, Casares, and Manilva Beaches Affected

In Estepona, all beaches except La Rada have been affected to varying degrees. Casares beach has suffered a loss of sand. Floods have occurred in urbanisations and land adjoining the Ancha beach. Manilva has seen a loss of sand and the appearance of longitudinal steps on the beaches of Sabinillas and next to the Manilva river.
