Historic Human Remains Unearthed at Iconic Marbella Hotel
During the refurbishment of the renowned Fuerte Marbella hotel, human remains dating back to the 17th or 18th centuries have been discovered. The Fuerte Group Hotels informed the Junta’s Departments of Culture and Heritage and Development about the findings at the Fort of San Luis on Wednesday, February 16. The fort, a cultural asset, is located within the hotel complex.
Revamping a Historical Asset
The Fort of San Luis, listed in the General Catalogue of Andalucian Historical Heritage, is part of the refurbishment process. The aim is to transform the historic hotel, situated on the beachfront in the heart of Marbella, into a new 5-star establishment.
Archaeological Supervision and Dating of the Remains
Jose Antonio Valiente, the archaeologist overseeing the project, is working on dating the remains. He is collaborating with civil servants who are responsible for the file opened to monitor the works.
Hotel Fuerte Marbella: A New Look in 2023
The hotel, which first opened its doors in 1957, has 251 rooms. After the refurbishment, it will feature a sea-view gym on the fifth floor, a wellness area, and a gastronomic offer supported by Michelin-starred chefs. The renovation will continue throughout 2022, and the hotel is set to reopen in 2023 with a fresh, renovated look and enhanced services.
