Tourist Apartments Continue to Lose Business in Marbella

Tourist apartments in Marbella continue to experience a decline in business. The number of tourists choosing to stay in these apartments plummeted in July, following a similar trend in June, compared to the same period last year. Overnight stays, which had set records in April and May, are also falling. The occupancy rate dropped to 62%, while the average stay increased.

Decline in Tourist Arrivals and Overnight Stays

The business of tourist apartments in Marbella continues to weaken this summer, with significant drops in the arrival of visitors who choose this type of accommodation, which is increasingly controversial due to the disturbances they cause. According to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), both the number of tourists and overnight stays continue to decline, dragging down the occupancy rate as well. In July, 17,254 visitors who arrived in Marbella chose a tourist apartment: 14,623 were foreigners and only 2,631 were Spaniards. These numbers are higher than in May (16,553) and June (14,284), but lower than in April (17,563) during Holy Week. Compared to the same month last year, this represents a decrease of 39%, as 28,443 tourists were reached then. The numbers are also lower than in 2019, before the pandemic.

Decrease in Overnight Stays

As for overnight stays, 105,656 were registered in July, 27% less than a year ago (145,168). This is almost 40,000 fewer nights. The decrease is more linked to foreign tourists (-25,942), although also, to a lesser extent, to national ones (-13,570). The average stay, on the other hand, rises to 6.12 days, one day more than in the same month last year (5.10). Occupancy plummeted to 62.12% after what was recorded in the same period of 2022 (81%). According to the INE, it is estimated that the staff employed was 629 people.

Hotels and Apartments

If we add those who stayed in hotels (83,277 visitors) and those who opted for tourist apartments (17,254), Marbella received 100,531 tourists in July. Both figures show a decline in national tourism, to which is added that of foreigners in apartments.
