Marbella Mayor Threatens Legal Action Over Alleged Drug Gang Links
Marbella’s Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, has issued a stern warning to the Spanish media, threatening to take legal action if they attempt to associate her with the ongoing investigation into her husband and stepson’s alleged involvement in a drug trafficking operation. The Spanish newspaper, El Diario, recently reported that Muñoz’s husband, Lars Broberg, and his son, Joakim Broberg, have been formally charged by the Spanish High Court for their alleged roles in the drug gang.
Allegations of Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering
The gang is suspected of shipping large amounts of marijuana and hashish to Sweden, the Broberg’s home country, and other northern European nations. Lars Broberg is accused of laundering the profits from the drug trafficking operation, while his son, Joakim, is believed to have been the gang’s ringleader. Despite these serious allegations, Muñoz, a member of the conservative Popular Party, has vehemently denied any connection to the case.
Mayor Muñoz Denies Involvement
Muñoz has stated that the case has no bearing on her role as mayor and has no implications for her personally. She also noted that due to her husband’s deteriorating health, the legal proceedings against him will not continue. She has threatened to take legal action against any media outlets that attempt to link her to the case.
Intercepted Conversations Reveal Boasts of Political Influence
El Diario has also disclosed the content of some of the conversations intercepted by the police during their investigation into the gang, which led to a series of arrests in 2021. In one such recording, Joakim Broberg is heard bragging to a business associate about the Popular Party’s recent victory in the Andalusian regional elections and their hold on power in Marbella, claiming that they essentially control the whole of Andalucía.
Further Accusations and Extradition
In addition to the drug trafficking and money laundering charges, Joakim Broberg has also been extradited to Spain on charges of involvement in organized crime. The case continues to unfold, with the Spanish media closely following the developments.
