PP and Vox Vote Against Defending the Name of Marbella’s Rogelio Vigil de Quiñones
The Popular Party (PP) and Vox have voted against defending the name of Marbella’s Rogelio Vigil de Quiñones. During the regular plenary session in March, both parties opposed the motion proposed by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to urge the Marbella City Council to request the Junta to restore the name of Rogelio Vigil de Quiñones to the Military Hospital of Seville. In an incomprehensible stance, they rejected the defense of one of the city’s most illustrious historical figures.
Regular Plenary Session Held After Easter
The regular plenary session for the month of March at the Marbella City Council took place on Monday, April 1, following Easter. One of the highlights was the motion presented by the PSOE for the Corporation to request the Junta to restore the name of Marbella’s Rogelio Vigil de Quiñones to the Military Hospital of Seville. This proposal was initially put forward in February but was tabled pending intervention from the military doctor’s family, which did not occur this morning.
PP and Vox Vote Against, Leaving PSOE and OSP to Defend
PP and Vox voted against the motion, leaving the defense of one of the heroes of Baler to the PSOE and the OSP. As a result, Marbella, his hometown, will not request Moreno Bonilla to reverse the decision he made a year ago to change the hospital’s name to Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos after rigging a referendum among healthcare professionals.
Historian and Socialist Councilor Laments “Wrong Decision”
Historian and socialist councilor, José Bernal (PSOE), lamented the “wrong decision” of the Junta and advocated for Marbella to defend one of its illustrious residents. He reminded of the deep family roots with the city, noting that “Francisco Vigil, Rogelio’s great-grandfather, was a perpetual councilor of Marbella”. The military doctor, one of the Last of the Philippines, made a significant contribution in treating beri-beri, a disease caused by nutritional deficiency.
Vox Councilor Attempts to Compare Vigil de Quiñones with Carlos Haya
From Vox, councilor Eugenio Moltó, attempted to compare Vigil de Quiñones with Carlos Haya, a military aviator of the Franco regime. His municipal group proposed a motion to request a plaque outside the chapel of the park bearing his name in Marbella.
PP Councilor Recalls Recognitions to Vigil de Quiñones
Enrique Rodríguez (PP) recalled all the recognitions made to Vigil de Quiñones in the city, but stated they would vote against the proposal as it was late and “partisan”. It is true that two years have passed since the name change, but until now the Junta had concealed the result of the consultation and this issue had not been known.
Debate Ends with Regret Over Negative Vote
To conclude the debate, José Bernal expressed regret over the negative vote and told the PP that they are “part-time Marbellans, which is the same as not being one”. In March 2022, the Junta changed the name of the then Hospital Vigil de Quiñones of Seville to Hospital Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos. This was done after a consultation among healthcare professionals, who supposedly endorsed this modification.
Other Matters Discussed
In the proposals of the government team, the new ordinance to regulate school and university transport service was initially approved. Overdue invoices from the Festivals and Works Delegation were also approved, as well as the start of the Sectorization Plan for the Marbería area in Nagüeles. As for the motions of the groups, those of the PP to request the central government measures against the invasive algae and to present budgets for this year were approved. On behalf of the PSOE, it was approved to undertake the solution of two lanes in the area known as Carril de Picaza between Nueva Andalucía and San Pedro Alcántara and one from Vox with an action plan for improvements and security in Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía.
