New Management for Ojén Eco Reserve Announced by Andalusian Government
The Junta, Andalusian regional government, declared on 24th August that it has initiated the tender process for a new company to oversee the Ojén Eco Reserve near Marbella in Malaga province. This comes after the previous company was ousted due to multiple serious infractions.
Junta Addresses Concerns Over Eco Reserve’s Future
In a recent statement, the Junta highlighted the critical situation the area is facing due to the definitive closure measures ordered. However, it was clarified that the Junta has not ordered the closure, but rather the eviction of the company that was managing the Eco Reserve. The Junta reiterated its commitment to the welfare of the approximately hundred animals inhabiting the reserve and the safety of its visitors.
Junta Takes Over Animal Care and Maintenance of the Reserve
Since 2023, the Junta has assumed responsibility for feeding the animals and monitoring their health. An investment of 30,000 euros has been made, which includes deworming and health control of the animals, as the care they had been receiving was deemed inadequate. From May 2024, the Junta also took over the maintenance of the reserve.
Improvements and Health Checks Initiated at the Reserve
As part of the maintenance, the Junta has repaired the perimeter fence of the enclosure, which was previously in a poor state. In July, health checks were initiated and approximately 60 animals have been microchipped. External tags have also been placed on the animals, further ensuring their safety and well-being.
