PP Leaders Address Press Conference on Coastal Train and Toll Suspension
Cristóbal Garre and Ángeles Muñoz, leaders of the People’s Party (PP) in Marbella, held a press conference on Monday. Coinciding with the start of the campaign for the European elections, Marbella’s PP president and mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, revisited a long-standing issue of contention with Pedro Sánchez’s government – the coastal train on the Costa del Sol, a project that was not implemented during Mariano Rajoy’s tenure. She also brought up the issue of the toll road, which her party never freed up.
PP Proposes Coastal Train and Toll Suspension
The PP announced on Monday that they have registered an initiative in both the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, calling for the coastal train and the suspension or discount of the toll on the Costa del Sol AP-7 motorway. These are two classic issues, neither of which were addressed during Rajoy’s government, but are now being consistently demanded.
Call for Government Commitment to Rail Corridor
“We demand a budgetary and political commitment from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to the rail corridor, given the mobility grievance we suffer in Marbella and the rest of the province in this matter,” stated local party president, Ángeles Muñoz. She was accompanied by national deputy Cristóbal Garre, who pointed out that Marbella is the only city with more than 150,000 inhabitants that lacks a railway connection.
Demands for Mobility Investments
“We demand the investments that correspond to us in terms of mobility from the Government, projects that never arrive, and that are a fair claim,” Muñoz emphasized. She criticized the comparative grievance with other areas of Spain, stating, “We have a significant traffic jam on the Costa del Sol motorway, which forces us to use the AP-7, the most expensive in Spain per square kilometer.”
PP Initiative Includes Toll Suspension
The PP’s initiative also includes the suspension or discount of the motorway toll “for residents, companies, and professionals, a liberalization that is fair and has been applied in other areas, such as Catalonia, to serve Sánchez’s interests,” Muñoz lamented. She also urged the socialists to vote in favor of this initiative “in defense of Marbella and its citizens.”
