Marbella’s Unemployment Rate Drops by 4% in March

A picture of Marbella’s promenade in March reveals a positive trend in the job market. The registered unemployment rate in the municipality of Marbella dropped by 4% in March, a significant decrease, albeit less than the 7.40% in 2018 and 6.42% in 2016, when Easter was also celebrated in this month and can be compared. Despite this, the unemployment figure is the lowest since 2008 and the first time it has fallen below 8,000 unemployed at this time of the year.

Employment Generation Begins in February

Following the increase in unemployment in January, after the Christmas campaign, February marked the start of the year in Marbella when most jobs are generated, a trend that continues for months. March ended with 8,736 people registered as job seekers at the Andalusian Employment Service (SAE) offices, which is under the Junta. This is 366 fewer than in February, a percentage drop of 4.02%. This is the best figure for March since 2008 and the first time it has fallen below 9,000 unemployed in this month.

Impact of Easter and Weather on Employment

The decrease is normal, but not so much considering that Easter was celebrated, which should have boosted hiring significantly, perhaps hampered by bad weather. To gain a better perspective, it is necessary to compare with previous years when this tourist and religious holiday fell in the third month of the year. The last time was in 2018 when unemployment fell by 936 people (7.40%), and before that in 2016, when it fell by 903 (6.42%).

Gender Breakdown and Yearly Comparison of Unemployment

Of the total unemployed left in March, 3,354 are men (154 fewer than in February) and 5,382 are women (212 fewer). The year-on-year variation shows that there are currently 655 fewer unemployed than just a year ago. Compared to before the pandemic, there are 3,145 fewer unemployed than in March 2019.

Positive Hiring Data in Marbella

Regarding hiring, the data is also positive in Marbella. During March, 4,391 contracts were made, which is 902 more than in February. However, it is 830 fewer than a year ago, when there was no Easter. Of the total, 3,134 were permanent (71.37%), 627 more than the previous month. The rest of the hires (1,257) were temporary.
