Unfortunate Holy Wednesday in Marbella Due to Rain
The throne of the Nazarene barely managed to traverse Trinidad Street before having to return. This unfortunate Holy Wednesday in Marbella was yet another day affected by the rain, a common occurrence this Easter week. The Nazarene and the Virgin of Greater Pain were able to take to the streets, but their journey was much shorter than planned, further reducing the original route. The Lord of Marbella only managed to traverse Trinidad Street before having to return.
Decision to Start the Procession Despite Weather Uncertainty
The excitement to start and the possibility of a break in the weather led the Governing Board to finally decide to start the procession, which lasted only a short while. Throughout the afternoon, there was uncertainty due to constant showers and at the scheduled departure time of 20:30, it was decided to wait another half hour.
Shorter Procession Route Due to Weather Conditions
With the normal procession no longer possible, the idea of a shorter route with fewer stops to reduce time on the street gained traction. Finally, at 21:00, the decision was made. “We’re going out,” was announced over the church of the Incarnation’s loudspeaker, much to the joy of those present.
Rain Intensifies During Procession
Although the rain had stopped when the procession began, it started again at 21:15 while the procession was being organized. The rain did not deter the procession from continuing, although there was a lot of tension. Around 21:30, the rain became more intense and alarms were raised. The Lord of Marbella had to return from the Plaza of the Holy Sepulchre.
Return of the Thrones Amidst Heavy Rain
The rain intensified as the throne of the Virgin of Greater Pain left the church. Meanwhile, her Mother, La Guapa, waited for her at the church door under a downpour that was becoming more intense. Both thrones were already on the street while umbrellas filled the square and the rain continued to pour.
Return to the Church of the Incarnation
By 21:45, the Nazarene was already back in the church and the Virgin of Greater Pain began her journey to the Brotherhood House, protected by her canopy and with petals from the Bocanegra School. The entire procession returned to the Church of the Incarnation, where a ceremony was held rocking the throne until 22:30.
Shortened Procession Route Attempted
The decision to go out was a risk, with the hope that the rain would give a break of at least a couple of hours to complete the short route, but this was not the case. The Lord of Marbella returned to the church after only half an hour on the street. The brotherhood attempted a short route through Trinidad, Salinas, Arte, Portada, Chorrón, Puente de Ronda, Peral, Huerta Chica, Plaza de la Victoria, Estación, Plaza de Los Naranjos, General Chinchilla and Carmen to return to the church.
Procession Bands and Unfortunate Holy Week
Finally, the throne of the Nazarene could only traverse Trinidad Street before returning, although the rest of the procession did reach Portada. Leading the way was the Band of bugles and drums with a squad of spenders and guides from the Royal Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene of Alhaurín el Grande. Opening the way for the Nazarene was the Musical Group of Marbella, and with the Virgin of Greater Pain was the Band of Music of “Los Moraos” of Alhaurín El Grande. This marks another unfortunate day in Holy Week 2024, which is being marked by rainfall as it has not been for a long time. The rains are not heavy, but they are causing great damage to the processions, as of the five planned so far, only two have been able to go out normally: the Bitterness, on Passion Saturday, and the Column, on Holy Monday.
